Mt. St. Helen volcanic ash sculpture created by hand with genuine ash from the eruption of 1980.

Approximate size (W x H x D): 7" x 6" x 2.25" (17.5 cm x 15.5 cm x 6 cm)

Made in USA.

On May, 1980, a dormant volcano in the State of Washington named Mount St. Helens erupted in the most powerful explosion ever recorded on the North American continent. With a force 500 times greater than the first Atomic bomb, it released a holocaust of destruction.

That morning quite unexpectedly, the north face of the mountain began to collapse and avalanche downward, broken apart by the awesome pressures of magma & gasses building up inside. Suddenly the mountain exploded laterally toward the north with tremendous force, blowing hot gasses, ash, huge rocks and chunks of ice out of the side of the mountain. Hurricane force winds of nearly 200 m.p.h. whipped through the foothills and valleys, tearing at and searing everything within 150 square miles. A pyroclastic flow of hot gas and ash cascaded out of the mountain and into Spirit Lake, then spilled down the course of the Toutie River to cover everything in its path with superheated 90F mud and debris 300 feet thick. The top of the mountain blew off throwing 1300 feet of idyllic snow clad peak into the sky. Hot ash and cinder poured upwards by the millions of tons, blanketing large portions of Eastern Washington, Idaho and Montana, turning day into night. Prevailing winds carried the ash into the stratosphere 63,000 feet high and on around the world, where it remained for over two years.

This original sculpture has been carved in a Seattle studio. These sculptures and cast, recarved and finished by hand, making each piece destinctly original. Stone-like and durable, a special finish ensures each piece will remain soft to the touch for years to come.

We are happy to bring you the warmth of Washington, created for you in this unusual volcanic "soapstone-like" sculpture.
